My Perfect Afternoon...

IMG_0546

Last night, I couldn't sleep. I was so excited because I had decided that today was going to be a perfect day. My legs were dancing under the sheets and it was a good job dh was working away otherwise he would have got kicked a few times. I had managed to get dd into craft club at the same time as ds going to nursery which meant I had two and a half blissful hours all to myself. I love my kids to bits but one needs a break now and again and this was it.

Before I dropped them off, I made sure the house was relatively tidy and hoovered up so I wouldn't waste my precious time. Then I baked scones. I baked them just before dropping them both off so they would be perfectly cool and ready to eat when I got home. I went out and bought some double cream and Bonne Mamam Strawberry Conserve. I served it up with Whittards Irish cream flavoured coffee in my new favourite cup. Ohhhh yummmmm. Delicious homebaked scone with a slightly crunchy outside and soft and crumbly on the inside. Not like shop bought ones with the baking soda aftertaste. I sat there at my kitchen table and browsed my mags. Perfect.

Then I did a bit of hooky. Loving this so much. Have I said that before? I think I may have to buy another pack of the yarn as I am going to make this super big for our bed. The rest of it I will make flowers with. There are plenty of uses for this gorgeous yarn. It is soft and easy to work with and the colours are fab.

And a bit of stitching. I so wanted the unicorn's ear finished but never mind - these things take time. Listened to Micheal Silverman's Jazz for a Rainy Day on Spotify. Lovely relaxing piano music. It wasn't raining, in fact, it was quite a reasonable day with a bit of sunshine but this music was also.... perfect.

Whilst looking at my mags I noticed this:

Can you spot the crochet blanket? £175 from Toast!!! Hmmm excepting the colours, not so disimiar to my Baby Steps.

I got some home decor inspiration and am set on this:

Previously I was adamant it would be this:

I am on a very nice journey of self discovery at the moment and am never quite sure of what I like but I am definitely moved toward the red. I kind of lost myself the last few years with one thing and the other and now I am trying to make out the pieces of the jigsaw that make me up if you get me. It's an interesting journey and I will share more things about "me" as I find them out! Our living room is desperate to be decorated. It is very plain and a sort of yellowy cream and very boring. I like bright bold colours and the red room is just so cosy and I think will be ideal for the coming autumn season.

Well, so long for now good readers. I have much to share but that is enough for one post. I am thinking I should blog more regularly and not leave great big gaps. Passing by your way soon. Big Thank You to all my new followers as well. Some don't appear to have blogs but if you do then leave me a comment so I can find you too. xx

What a lovely way to spend part of the day. Sometimes you just need alone time. The blanket is beautiful.

That sounds like a perfect day to me Hazel, hope you manage to do it again soon. Amazing the prices they charge for handmade items isn't it. I am doing a crochet blanket but I love your stripy one and want to do one of those too.
The idea for your living room looks lovely, very warm and cosy.
Good luck on your voyage of self-discovery....

Those scones look devine! Love looking at the mag pics, I definately agree about the red decor, it seems so much more warm and inviting, especially with autumn just around the corner. You can curl up on the sofa with your crochet blanket and be all snug.

Sounds you had a wonderfult imte and planned out your me time perfectly.

If I can offer one word of caution with regards to your decorating plans. My husband came with an orange/red 3 piece suite which was great as it replaced my grotty one. However after the extension was done and it was time to decorate getting a colour for the walls that went with it was a marathon of a job that took months and numerous sample pots. Keep the red for the walls or soft furnishings that you will probably replace when your redecorate again.

That scone looks like heaven!! And, I love Bonne Mamman--I kept a couple of empty jars and they make the most perfect water glasses. :)

I love the look of the red room too, i decided to paint one wall in our dining room red last year and it really does make the room.

isn't it wonderful to just have you time--it's so rare these days. i decided this weekend that i am going to try and have tech-free sundays starting in september. i haven't touched a needle (stitching or sewing in almost 4 months) and i really miss it. thanks for the additional inspiration to be a little more "conservative" with my time.

I love warm colors so I would favor the red too. If I lived nearby I'd come help you eat scones and drink coffee. Yum! Your hooky and stitching progress is looking good. You can make a beautiful throw/blanket for a lot less money!

I know exactly what you mean, we all need a little bit of 'me time' occassionally. It looks like you made the most of your alone time, well done.

What a fabulous day! I know what you mean about red. I love red, and I have my front room pony walls red, the fireplace and bead board downstairs red, and my stairways and reading nook red. It just takes a splash to add a lot of drama!

Love your blanket!

Oh what a wonderful afternoon. You painted a picture in words and photos. What fun it was to share with you.
I like the red too. I'm looking at the color "paprika" for my new home.

Oh, that does sound like an absolutely perfect day, Hazel--especially when you start off with such a scrumptious looking treat to eat!

Love both of your possible re-decorating themes. I have a red dining room and do love it--especially in the fall and winter.

Hope you get more of those days "just for you"--they are so important when you have young children...

It looks like you had a fantastic time Hazel! Doesn't it feel good to play hookey?! The scones look better than anything I've ever seen!

I think it's normal for our tastes to change over time. I love red and can definitely see why you'd be drawn to it. Keep us posted on what you decide to do!

What a lovely day! After "discovering" myself, I chose both color ways. In the fall and winter I have reds and warm colors and spring and summer I pull out the cream slip covers and go very light and airy! Enjoy your journey...

Louise said...

Absolutely LOVE red for a living room, that is what I have :)

Those scones look absolutely delicious!

I hope to try that crochet blanket stitch one day soon, I hope I can do it!

Hi Hazel sorry l think you asked me a bit ago about the yarn yep 100% Acrylic l sell good range of colours and a lot softer than most acrylics but l do use 100% Merino and lots of Colinette yarns depends on what l'm making

OMG Hazel! I'm not stalking you, honest! What a beautiful blog, you are so creative, am addicted already, been here reading and admiring your handiwork and your daughters (kids are gorgeous). I completely understand the precious moments you've had alone today, sadly with Noah being so young, when i get time alone i am either ironing, housework-ing or minimin-ing! Will be an avid follower and admirer forever...donna x
